The President’s View - April 2010

Connect | Learn | Play | Belong
The EWGA mission is connecting women to learn, play and enjoy golf for business and for fun.
What have you LEARNED as a member of the Dallas EWGA?
The rules of golf? A better short game? All about Match Play? There are really more women interested in golf AND playing golf than you knew? Have you LEARNED the game of golf can bring women closer together and can also make climbing the corporate ladder a bit easier? Or, do you know we host social events at interesting venues across the Metroplex? I've LEARNED all of this, and so much more since I joined the Dallas EWGA in 2007.
This year's Education & Player Development calendar has a complete range of offerings to expand your knowledge about the rules of golf, or to help you work on specific aspects of your game. On May 1, at Champions Circle we're co-hosting a skills challenge with the Ft. Worth EWGA. Not only will you get help with your short game, since we haven't co-hosted an event with the Ft. Worth EWGA in quite a while, this event provides you an opportunity to LEARN about their members, too!
Our Social Events this year are all about LEARNING more about each other. May 15 we'll all LEARN how to play the ponies during a fun day at Lone Star Park! There will be plenty of time for networking, catching up with old friends and making new ones. We encourage you to bring your friends and family along - we want to LEARN about them too!
And... about that corporate ladder I mentioned: Robin Anderson, a member of the Houston EWGA and the EWGA Businesswoman of the Year in 2009, can tell you all about the value of being a golfer. As an executive in the oil industry, she has some great stories to share about how golf's made it easier for her to stand out among her peers, and fit in with the leadership who help open doors. Personally, I've LEARNED that no one cheers more loudly when I've shared a positive moment in my career than my golf girlfriends and they're equally supportive when opportunities don't work out.
So this year, let's take advantage of all the benefits our EWGA has to offer us: discounts on golf lessons, equipment, apparel and tee times; opportunities to improve our games; plus amazing friendships to find and develop through social events or group trips like a cruise to Bermuda or planning to go to the 2011 Solheim Cup at Killeen Castle, in Ireland.

Facebook connects over 300 million users. Sean Mullings has over 17 million LinkedIn connections. I have 306 LinkedIn connections creating a network of over 4,646,000 people I can reach. Twitter is a service for friends, family, co-workers and Dallas EWGA members to share information and stay connected by "tweeting" updates about your thoughts, your day, anything really as long as you type it in 140 characters or less. In today's world there are more ways than ever to stay "connected". I'm sure I don't speak for everyone but there are times when being this connected sure feels lonely to me.

Then there are times like Sunday, February 28 at our Tee Party. That day, I truly felt connected to over 60 beautiful women who all share a passion for golf, amazing energy and an interest in connecting on a personal and professional level. This year's Tee Party was a fabulous event with 29 women competing in a scramble at The Golf Club at Castle Hills followed by a high energy evening filled with laughter, bidding, raffles and great friends enjoying a great dinner. Over 45 members, joined by 17 guests interested in learning more about the EWGA, spent time sharing stories, exploring opportunities to learn more about the game of golf and about each other's professional and personal lives. What a pleasure it was to watch women connecting with other women, seeing their smiles, hearing their laughter and sharing high fives, handshakes and hugs throughout the day and into the evening.
One guest asked me, "What is the value of the EWGA to you?" I hesitated for a moment while I put my thoughts together. My response was as follows; "The women I've met and the friends I've made. Sure, I've found more opportunities to golf than I ever had before; and more ways to improve my game through the Dallas EWGA; I've also saved money at Golf Galaxy, Golfsmith, DA's Spring Creek Golf, several of the Golf Club Network courses around Dallas and at many more national and local sponsor's organizations; but the real value to me is the close friends that make Dallas home for me and the many wonderful women I've been given the opportunity to meet and get to know in Ft. Worth, San Antonio, Austin, Houston, Washington DC, Miami, Long Island and Sacramento.
So c'mon, join me in CONNECTing through the EWGA - there's no better way to spend a few hours than with your girlfriends! I look forward to seeing each of you at our many Social, Educational, Golf and League events around town throughout the year.
Let's CONNECT again at the first Golf Event of the year, March 27th at Waterview!

The President’s View - January | February 2010

Connect | Learn | Play | Belong

The EWGA mission is connecting women to learn, play and enjoy golf for business and for fun.

For the first 10 years of my career, I didn't golf. In fact, I didn't “get” why anyone would golf? It didn't seem like good exercise, it was an old boy's network and it seemed to be a rather subdued game (and if we've met, you know “subdued” is rarely used to describe me). But… as I grew in my career and moved from city to city, I looked for a way to CONNECT with co-workers, my father and more friends. The President of a small software company I worked for suggested golf would help me get to know our customers better, so I gave it a try.

Joe was right; golf did help me CONNECT with our customers (bankers). The game became a conversation starter, a way to relate to strangers and become friends, or at least more than simply business associates. I soon loved the game – for the challenge, for better working relationships and for finally finding a common bond with my dad. I played 18 holes every weekend with “the boys”. I loved the game, but I still felt something was missing.

I joined the EWGA 5 years ago and now I've CONNECTED with so many incredible women that I feel like I've lived in Dallas my entire life; I never lack for things to do and great friends to spend time with. And my game has improved! At golf events, we use our handicaps to CONNECT members in like foursomes. At social events, I've CONNECTED with members that have helped my husband find a new job in his new career, introduced me to new adventures, enabled me to introduce new friends to one of my passions (triathlons)! Volunteer opportunities have helped me CONNECT my professional skills with my personal passion.

Why did you join the Dallas EWGA? This year, we've got an exciting variety of social events, education and player development opportunities, leagues and golf events to help you CONNECT with other women! Check out the calendar with over 30 events already scheduled and join us Sunday, February 28 for a round of golf and our annual kick-off event – The Tee Party at Castle Hills and learn about the many rewarding ways to CONNECT through the Dallas EWGA.
