Recruiting Tips Need some tips to help you with recruiting? Here are some that may work for you. They come from EWGA’s 2000 Recruiter of the Year, Joan Cavanaugh. Contact any member of the membership committee for materials.
Keep EWGA brochures, applications (with your name and membership # in the MGAM section) and calendar of events on hand - especially in your golf bag - to distribute when opportunity knocks.
Every woman you meet is a potential new member. Start the conversation with, "Last week I played my best game of golf" or "Are you a golfer?" There are women out there who are waiting to be identified as a potential golfer but no one has ever asked them. If you are shy about opening up the conversation then wear EWGA logo apparel when you go to the grocery store or the beauty parlor. Women will ask you, "What is EWGA?" The response you may hear - "I’ve been looking for a group like this, what I need to do to join?"
Visualize finding potential members and set a goal wherever you go. Everywhere: cocktail parties, business meetings, conventions, trains, planes, the beach, the beauty salon, on vacation. On a four-day trip to Florida, one member set a goal for two new members. Now she has two new friends and golfing partners in Florida and the EWGA has two new members.
Network in the field of businesswomen. Attend meetings of other women’s organizations in your area. This will give you an opportunity to not only network but also leave brochures on the registration table.
Attend all of the functions of the Chapter. Keep your membership goal in mind. Identify the guests at each function and show your enthusiasm as a member of the organization. It is important to listen attentively to their considerations and then answer each one with a positive response about the benefits of membership. Like your golf shot, visualize the outcome of them signing the application and handing you a check or credit card.
When you are in the midst of a gathering of men, lead the conversation to a discussion of your involvement with the organization. Since golf is a social event, a common response from men is "I’d like to get my wife/girlfriend involved." Design gift certificates for these occasions. Fill out the new member application, get the membership dues, and give the gentleman the gift certificate he could use to present his gift membership to the woman in his life. Then submit the application and dues to Association Headquarters or the local membership committee.
Spread the word to your family members, your friends, and other EWGA Chapter members, teaching pros in your area, your Country Club and local golf leagues. Tell them that you want to win the Member-Get-A-Member contest and tell them why. Some members are hesitant to enroll their friends for fear of being too pushy, even though they would like to have a friend join. They may be happy to give you the name and number of a friend. These leads are gold. Share the key benefits of joining. They will learn from or play with women on their own skill level. The organization will provide places for them to play. And together, we are fostering the growth of women’s golf.
Never give up on a lead. Joining an organization is a matter of joining at the right time for each of us. So keep a file of those you tried to enroll and make it the beginning of your list for next year.
The last tip is MAGIC and it is the same as the FIRST. Carry a EWGA Chapter application in your briefcase, purse or golf bag at all times...and everywhere you go. Don’t leave home without IT!
